Accessibility and
Community in Composing Spaces

Heather Listhartke’s research is centered on considerations of accessibility, broadly defined across material, functional, and social aspects of students’ lives, affects community formation and sustainability in composing spaces including the classroom

Important considerations of accessibility take into account students’ full dispositions towards the space which is characterized by their previous experiences, cultural and social backgrounds, health and wellness, personal and professional obligations, and overall feelings, a concept that I call affective orientation. When thinking about the construction of composing spaces including the online and in person classrooms we need to consider students’ affective orientation towards the space along with accessible design of the material, functional, and social construction of the space.
